Sleeping Bag Care and Tips

Tip 1: Lay the sleeping bag out at least an hour before bedtime. This allows the insulation to expand which maximizes its insulating ability.

Tip 2: For consistently wet or damp weather conditions, consider a sleeping bag with synthetic fill. These particular sleeping bags insulate well when wet.

Tip 3: In order to maintain your sleeping bag's loft feel, you need to store it in a place with plenty of space. Long periods of compression in storage will reduce the effectiveness of your sleeping bag.

Tip 4: Avoid dry cleaning your sleeping bag if at all possible; dry cleaning solutions are petroleum-based solvents, which will coat insulation and prevent re-lofting of your sleeping bag.

Tip 5: For maximum insulation, store your clothing inside your sleeping bag while you are sleeping. An added bonus by doing this   is your clothes will be toasty in the morning.

Tip 6: WD-40 will help lubricate your sleeping bag zippers sp they will close much easier.

Tip 7: If your zipper is sticking because it is worn or old, rub a No. 2 pencil along the teeth. The graphite will smooth out the rough spots on the zipper in most cases.

Tip 8: If a missing tooth on your sleeping bag is causing the zipper to get stuck, run the zipper quickly over the area of the missing tooth. The momentum will help the zipper stay on track.

Tip 9: 40% of your body's heat loss can escape through your head, be sure to wear a hat, preferably fleece. Additionally, be sure to use a full lenght pad the thicker the better under your sleeping bag; this will help offset the cold ground, making your night more comfortable and much warmer.

Tip 10: When you are selecting a sleeping bag, don't rely on cushion as the primary characteristic. Since you will be sleeping in your sleeping bag, and not on it, look for a sleeping bag that will keep you stay warm and dry. Sleeping pads should take care of the cushion that you will need for comfort.
